Old North Academy Mission Statement
Our mission is to support the whole child by nurturing PreK–8th grade students to be curious, capable, and confident learners. With high-quality instruction and student ownership, we cultivate critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and empathy—empowering our students to lead in their communities and beyond. Rooted in the strength of our ONE Family, the Old North Experience ensures every child is supported, inspired, and prepared for lifelong success.

Pillars of Academic Success:
At Old North Academy, we focus on three key pillars to support our students and families: WIN Time, Community Partnerships, and Family Engagement. Together, these pillars connect students with personalized learning opportunities, build character by offering mentorship and role models, and remove barriers to learning by providing everyday necessities. This comprehensive support system nurtures student development and success, ensuring every child excels academically and personally with a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

WIN Time: At Old North Academy, WIN (What I Need) Time provides small group, personalized instruction designed to accelerate learning and support every student’s success. For PreK through eighth grade, WIN Time involves assessing students, grouping them based on their specific needs in ELA, Math, and Science, and delivering targeted intervention or enrichment. This focused approach ensures each child receives the support they need to grow academically and achieve their full potential.

Family Engagement: Families are essential partners in every child’s education. We actively collaborate with parents and guardians to build strong connections that support student growth and success. Through PTO/PAC (Parent Advisory Committee), families are given a voice in school decisions and meaningful opportunities for collaboration and leadership. Our partnership with HOMEWORKS! extends this engagement into the home, offering resources, strategies, and goal setting to strengthen student achievement. Parent-Teacher Workshops and HOMEWORKS! community dinners further provide families with tools, support, and a unique connection, making family engagement a cornerstone of our school culture.

Additional Engagement Opportunities: Families are also invited to participate in a variety of school events and resources, including the Back to School Bash, Meet the Teacher Night, Field Day attendance, Care Team, parent classes, and access educational materials that support family success.

Community Partnerships: At Old North Academy, strong community partnerships are at the heart of our mission to support the whole child. These collaborations provide students with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities they need to grow and thrive. The Little Bit Foundation provides essentials like books, school supplies, and clothing; HomeWorks strengthens family engagement through teacher home visits; The Village teaches young men to be leaders; Walker’s Winners builds skills in math and reading; TRIO supports students in preparing for college and future careers; and The Sophia Project empowers young women through mentorship and leadership development. Together, these partnerships give students access to resources and experiences that foster personal development, academic success, and prepare them to succeed as future community leaders.

Curriculum Focus

Our curriculum emphasizes a balance of social-emotional development and academic achievement across the core subjects of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. Through advanced learning techniques and proven instructional practices, we help students master learning standards while also building essential life skills. Social-Emotional-Behavioral Learning and the Rethink Ed program provide tools for self-awareness, empathy, and resilience, while extracurricular opportunities extend learning beyond the classroom. This approach ensures every student develops as both a confident learner and a compassionate community leader.

Instructional Practices: We provide high-quality learning materials, questions, and tasks that enable all students to master the content. Our resources include My Sci, Eureka Math Squared, CKLA (elementary), My Perspective (middle school), TCI Social Studies (all grades), and Creative Curriculum (Pre-K).

Student Ownership: We believe that active participation is crucial for student success. Our students are not just present in the classroom; they are responsible for their learning. We hold them accountable, encourage them to lead data-based conversations, and ensure they are cognitively engaged with their daily work.

Social-Emotional-Behavorial Learning

Rethink: The Rethink Program reinforces social-emotional learning by providing strategies that support students’ overall well-being.

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports): PBIS is an evidence-based, three-tier framework designed to promote positive behavior and enhance school culture. At Old North Academy, PBIS is brought to life through initiatives where students earn Comet Cards for demonstrating values such as safety, responsibility, readiness, and respect. These awards can be redeemed at the Comet Cart, and students are further celebrated through monthly incentives and recognition as Star Students of the Month during assemblies, creating a culture where positive behavior is recognized, encouraged, and celebrated.

Restorative Practices: Restorative Practices empower students to build and maintain relationships, resolve conflicts, and repair harm. These practices foster accountability, empathy, and a supportive environment where students learn the importance of responsibility and community.

Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities enrich the educational experience at Old North Academy, giving students the chance to explore their passions, build teamwork, and develop leadership skills. Our athletics program includes Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Girls’ Volleyball, Cheerleading, Step Team, Flag Football, Dance, and E-Sports—each designed to promote discipline, physical fitness, and school pride. Beyond athletics, our clubs such as Chess Club, Basic Sports Skills, Social Skills, and Robotics Club offer creative and academic outlets where students can sharpen problem-solving skills, collaborate with peers, and build confidence. These opportunities nurture well-rounded learners, preparing students not only for future success in school but also in life.
